first piece together a 4″ black & white collage from magazine pages, place a 1/2″ grid in white, go draw 8″ x 8″ – a very slow task

Studio Fundamentals class at George Mason University: The challenge was to make a collage with a focal point and two other areas of emphasis.  Draw the collage, 8″ square, using an original graphite value scale   After struggling for hours to make a collage from bits of b&w magazine photos, I figured out that if I had used fewer photographs my task would have been a lot easier because I would have had fewer tones of black, ie., cold, warm and sepia, to name a few.  I had a magnificent image of a woman’s torso and huge nipples and in the final composition, I did incorporate this image along with two men looking up and a huge reaching arm in a suit, a personal statement about reaching for intimacy and finding cold, coldness symbolized by the concrete banner.
